David Tennant wins Radio Times 2014 Television Champion poll

Over three weeks and after 9 million votes in 127 matches, David Tennant has won the final of the Radio Times Television Champion poll.

Radio Times today reported that David Tennant beat Benedict Cumberbatch in a grand final which drew more than 2.85 million votes. In a keenly fought battle over five days, Tennant eventually emerged triumphant with 1.53 million votes compared to 1.33 million for Cumberbatch.

David Tennant easily won his heat of the first round with 90.78% of the vote (beating Jessica Raine).

In the second round there were strong suspicions of some tactical voting by fans of other 'stars' as David Tennant won his heat with only 57% of the vote (beating Sarah Lancashire who is not known to have a massive fan following).

David Tennant won his heat of the third round more easily as he scored 89% of the vote (beating Cillian Murphy).

Following that, David Tennant won his heat of the fourth round with 71% of the vote (beating Matthew Macfadyen).

Next David Tennant won his heat of the fifth round with 78.6% of the vote (beating Karen Gillan).

The semi-final was a much tougher battle as he won with only 51.36% of the vote (beating Tom Hiddleston).

In the semi-finals Benendick Cumberbatch also had a tough tussle with Ricky Gervais and afterwards Radio Times reported that over 3 million votes were cast in just that round alone!

Apart from the glory, there is no actual prize and it seems likely that the television 'stars' themselves will not even be aware of this popularity contest. In fact Radio Times are the real winners as they reported today that over 6 million votes have been cast to date and this type of figure will help the website attract more advertising revenue.
