Two LA newspapers mention Rex Is Not Your Lawyer pilot

Two Los Angeles based newspapers mention David Tennant's pilot Rex Is Not Your Lawyer in the past couple of days.

The Hollywood Reporter mentions it in its "Know Your Pilots" feature online.

They describe the plot as "A top Chicago litigator who becomes so crippled by panic attacks that he can no longer appear in the courtroom and starts coaching his clients to represent themselves."

Their opinion is "Another legal drama, but this actually sounds potentially cool. Question is whether this is a just a nifty pilot idea or a nifty weekly series."

The LA Times has an article about pilots and says about David Tennant's drama:
"Rex Is Not Your Lawyer is co-written by actors Andrew Leeds and David Lampson and produced by Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun. It's a comedic drama about a brilliant lawyer who begins coaching those seeking to represent themselves after he suffers debilitating panic attacks, which make it impossible for him to litigate in court. The cast includes David Tennant ("Doctor Who"), pictured left, Jerry O'Connell ("Cougar Town"), Abigail Spencer ("Mad Men"), Jeffrey Tambor ("Arrested Development"), Jane Curtin ("Crumbs"), Cleo King ("Sons of Anarchy"), and Lindsey Kraft ("Southland")."

That article also contains the photo of David Tennant to the right.

The current situation is that officially NBC are still deciding whether or not to commission the pilot into a full television series.

Murder in Samarkand review

The Independent has a review of Murder in Samarkand.

The review says that David Tennant is "terribly typecast – not as Dr Who, but as himself" but later add:

"In this instance he put in a fantastic performance, but his very vivacity was almost a distraction from David Hare's superbly brisk, no-nonsense script based on Murray's memoir."

2 Doctor Who Proms concerts planned for 2010.

There will be two special Doctor Who themed Proms concerts this Summer at the Royal Albert Hall.

The Proms series of concerts run this year between 16th July and 11th September.

In 2008 there was a special lunchtime Sunday concert with a Doctor Who theme during the series and this year it has been expanded to two concerts - one on the Saturday night and the other at Sunday lunchtime.

In 2008 David Tennant was playing Hamlet in Stratford-Upon-Avon during that time so he recorded a special episode called Music Of The Spheres which was screened during the concert.

It is unlikely that David Tennant will be involved this year but it is highly likely that clips of him playing the Doctor will be played during the concert.

In 2008 the Doctor Who concert was the fastest selling one of the Proms series and the waiting list for tickets reached over 3,000 so it's advisable to apply for tickets as soon as they go on sale in a couple of months.

David Tennant in the broadsheets supporting The Labour Party

A couple of the broadsheets (The Guardian and The Telegraph) have run articles in the past couple of days about The Labour Party using celebrities (including David Tennant) to help promote their party in the lead up to the General Election later this year.

(David Tennant even appeared in a party political broadcast for them in 2005.)

The Telegraph article says "It is thought that the fight for the celebrity vote is more intense during this general election campaign for a number of reasons - the MPs' expenses scandal has meant stars are more reluctant to associate themselves with politics, while showing sympathy to the arts is also seen as a vote winner.

Kathy Lette, the author and Labour supporter, told The Observer: "It is particularly important for the Labour party because the Conservatives have such funds.
"They may have the coffers, but we have the charisma and the comedians.""

However the article concludes with a quote from film director Michael Winner saying that he believes that the celebrity vote has little impact:
"We just don't have stars of that level. I am not sure even someone like David Tennant is widely enough known. If you went out on the street, quite a lot of people would not be sure who he is. I have been voting for 55 years and this time I think I will probably wait until the last minute and then vote simply to keep one or other of them out."

Last night at the What’s On Stage Awards ceremony at the Prince of Wales Theatre in London, the second award to be announced was for Best Supporting Actor which went to Sir Patrick Stewart and the MC introduced him as from the “David Tennant / RSC production of Hamlet .“

That was the only time that David Tennant was mentioned on stage at the award ceremony although Patrick Stewart was asked to stay on stage as the play also won the Best Shakespearean Production Award (which was sponsored by Shakespeare 4 Kidz) with 29.8% of the vote (the next highest only scored 18%).

These awards were voted for by the public and 46,000 voted which was 11,000 up from 2009.

Unfortunately director Gregory Doran did not win the Best Director Award as that went to Trevor Nunn with 23.9% of the vote compared to Greg’s 22.9%.

Edward Bennett (who took over the role of Hamlet while David was having his operation) unfortunately came last in the category of Best Takeover In A Role only scoring 9% of the vote against 30% for John Barrowman who won.

Carig Murray talks about David Tennant playing him in Murder In Samarkand

Craig Murray talks about David Tennant playing him in Murder In Samarkand on Saturday in this article in the Daily Mail.

As well as giving the background to both his life and the making of the radio play, Crag has the following to say about David:

Even I did not know David Tennant was playing me until two days before recording started. I am of course absolutely delighted. I watched Tennant's Hamlet on TV at Christmas and thought it was superb. I have been a Doctor Who fan virtually my whole life - I even once knitted myself a Tom Baker scarf. To have my story retold by great talents such as David Hare and Tennant outweighs the Hollywood dream.

Nadira got to work directly with Tennant and found him charming, helpful and entirely unassuming. After working with Tennant playing me, it must be pretty disappointing to return home to the real thing.

I am delighted with the final outcome. I had doubted it would be possible to reduce such a morally complex book to a 90-minute radio drama, but it is stunning.

Update on the David Tennant Quiz

On Sunday on DavidTennantOnTwitter.com we tried a new way of playing the quiz which was having a predetermined position to win each question. (See here for more info.)

DavidTennantFan won on Sunday and, by coincidence, after checking back on the quiz answers, if we had played it under the first-past-the-post rules then it would have been a tie (with 2 correct answers first) between DavidTennantFan and iantoscybergirl. DavidTennantFan then won the tie-break (which iantoscybergirl was also eligible to answer).

Of course that doesn't really prove anything as, for example, rizzleskizzle_x (who has won quizzes the most number of times) was obviously deliberately posting his or her answers later than usual which I expect other people were too. (Although he or she wouldn't have known it, there was only once that the 1st place was the winner on Sunday.)

Afterwards people were asked for feedback but very little was received! The responses were quite evenly split between those who liked the new system and those who didn't.

Personally I think the winner should be the first to answer or it's not really a contest but equally it's understandable that if people have a slower connection then they are rarely going to win. Unfortunately no realistic solutions about how to make it more fair all round were received.

Therefore for tomorrow's quiz we are going to experiment by having two winners for each question. The first will be the first to answer correctly and the second winner for each question will be the tenth person to answer correctly. If you like or dislike this then please send feedback via either a Tweet or an email after the quiz. (Not during it as there's too many tweets to read properly.)

The quiz tomorrow (number 46!) will be at 10am (as it's Valentine's Night and also so that the Australians can join in). There will not be a quiz next weekend but on Wednesday 23rd February there will be a special quiz at 8pm of 10 questions about the Doctor Who episode The Christmas Invasion.

Above all please remember that these quizzes are just about FUN! They do not prove that someone is a bigger fan of David Tennant than anyone else. It's just a way of answering questions about David and having FUN.

More about David Tennant donating his bag for charity

Following the post yesterday about David Tennant donating his bag to aid money for Marie Curie Cancer Care, the part about David's bag in the newspaper report is:

"ACTOR David Tennant has used this Adidas kit bag all around the world. He told Marie Curie it was something he used all of the time, even while filming Dr Who. The large holdall also contains signed DVDs from the Dr Who series. "

In David's usual self-depreciating style he is quoted as saying “This battered old thing has been all round the world and has been very faithful. There’s a signed DVD inside – so it might be worth something...

Other celebrities who have donated items for the auction include footballer Alan Shearer, Dame Helen Mirren, Cherie Blair and Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

Bidders will get the chance to get their hands on the celebrity items at an auction at the Hilton Hotel, Bottle Bank, Gateshead, next month. Marie Curie Cancer Care has arranged the event as part of their Handbags and Gladrags Ball. All proceeds will be donated to the charity’s appeal. Tickets for the ball, on March 13, are £75 per person.

Marie Curie is hoping to raise enough money to provide more free nursing care for people with terminal illnesses, both in their own homes and in the charity’s hospices.

Taking place during Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal month, the ball will also feature a drinks reception, a four-course meal, live entertainment, disco and a specialist silent auction.

More info about the auction and the work the charity does is at www.mariecurie.org.uk.

David Tennant and Hollywood

The Daily Express have posted an article today saying that they believe that David Tennant COULD be about to make a Doctor Who movie in Hollywood following on from what Billie Piper said on 29th January.

The article starts with the paragraph:
"Hollywood is calling Doctor Who star David Tennant to play the Time Lord on the big screen."
It then uses the phrase "But David, 38, may be too busy in America" before talking about both Rex Is Not Your Lawyer and the Burke and Hare movie.

David Tennant Quiz #45 on Sunday 7th February

Each week on DavidTennantOnTwitter.com there is a David Tennant Quiz.

Sometimes it is about a specific aspect of his career (e.g. Doctor Who Series Four) and sometimes it is a general quiz about his career and productions that he has been involved in.
On Sunday 7th February there will be the 45th quiz and we will be trying an experiment.

Several people have mentioned that having the first person to post the answer as the winner each time favours those with the fastest Internet connection so this time a pre-determined position will win each question.

For example for the first question the fifth correct answer may be the winner but for the second question it may be the tenth correct answer.

As previously stated this is only an experiment so please leave feedback after the quiz either by a message through Twitter to David_Tennant@Twitter or send an email to DavidTennantOnTwitter@Gmail.com.

The quiz will be at 8pm UK time on Sunday and after the quiz proof that the winning positions were pre-determined will be posted.

To answer a question, start your Tweet with @David_Tennant and there will be 10 questions about all aspects of David Tennant's career. Please remember that if you have your updates locked then I won't be able to see your answers so unblock your updates for the duration of the quiz.

Previous winners are posted here.

Press release about The BBC have issued a press release about Murder In Samarkand

The BBC have issued a press release about the David Hare radio play Murder In Samarkand which David Tennant stars in on Saturday 20th February.

Click here to read the press release but as it will disappear after broadcast it says:

"Saturday Play – Murder In Samarkand

Saturday 20 February
2.30-4.00pm BBC RADIO 4

David Tennant stars in David Hare's new drama for radio, Murder In Samarkand, based on the memoir by Craig Murray.

In Hare's play, Craig is a high-flyer in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office who loves his job and is proud to be appointed Ambassador for the first time, to Tashkent. It's before the Iraq war and Uzbekistan is newly in focus as a useful ally in the "War on Terror".

Craig is a man who, when he works, likes to work really hard, and when he has fun, he likes to really enjoy himself – and he immediately starts to do both. He visits the local British businesses, he finds the girls, the night clubs and the drinking friends. And he discovers he is Ambassador to a dire regime that imprisons dissidents and routinely uses torture on its citizens. He realises the Uzbeks are supplying the Americans with intelligence derived from torture, and he cannot get his head around the fact that UK complicity in this doesn't seem to concern his superiors – though they are shocked by the girls and the night clubs. The consequences for him couldn't be greater.

Producer/Ann Scott"

David Tennant in Doctor Who Magazine 418

Kasterborous has a preview of Doctor Who Magazine #418 where dresser Louise Page talks about dressing David Tennant.

On GallifreyBase.com polyg described the article as:
"Louise Page gives an interview and half the interview is about David Tennant and his costume. There are some new bits including people's reaction to the blue suit (including David's), about working with David and whether Matt Smith wore the stunt brown costume (which is one size bigger) or not.

One extract about David reads "I couldn't have asked for a more wonderful actor. I was really lucky. He wore the costume with such style. He's the loveliest man to dress and to work with. To have four years with somebody who looks that good in your clothes was so nice. It was very much our costume, and I 'm proud of the fact that the suits and coats just about withstood the battering that they got from filming. I started Doctor Who with David, and I felt that the time to go was when he did. My biggest scare was when I thought he might stay for an extra year, because that would have made it difficult for me to go. I wouldn't have wanted someone to inherit my costume. I don't mind Matt Smith putting it on for a couple of scenes, but..."

It's funny how DT was doing things with the costume that wound her up (the buttons, putting a knife and a fork at his top pocket at lunch times: "The more I 'd say 'Don't do it' the more he would, for my benefit" but Louise's tone is very affectionate.
Elsewhere in the magazine Steven Moffatt answers the question "Is it important that the actor playing the Doctor is a bit barmy?"

"Not at all. And nor does it have to be! It doesn't hurt, but it's not a necessity. David Tennant is a brilliant, vibrant, huge, quite theatrical Doctor but in reality he's a kindly modest man. He's not 'Doctor-y' at all. He absolutely understands and gets the Doctor, a brilliant version of him, and his Doctor is a big Doctor, he's an in-your-face Doctor. David is not an in-your-face man at all. That's the last thing he is, he's far too well mannered."
"

David Tennant at charity Pub Quiz for Centrepoint

Last night David Tennant was one of the celebrities who attended "The Ultimate Pub Quiz" at Shoreditch House and helped raise over £40,000 for the homelessness charity Centrepoint.
Among the other celebrities there were Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon, Richard Bacon, and Shane Ritchie. Kirsty Young was the quizmaster.

For the second round there was an auction of some of the celebrities among the corporate tables. Richard Bacon tweeted the following about the auction:

"At a charity quiz - auctioned against Rob Brydon, Steve Coogan, Xander Armstrong and David Tennant. Guess who received the lowest bid? "

"I received the lowest bid, by a considerable margin. David Tennant went for £1,900. I was £250."

"Steve Coogan was auctioned for £1,700, to which he said, "Ive got to be worth more than Dr f****** Who". "

"Quite flattered to know I was independently valued at 13% of David Tennant."
Click here for more information about the event from Centrepoint's website and here for more photos by Rex Features.

The event made a couple of newspapers - click here for the Evening Standard and this link for an article on the event on MonstersAndCritics.com.

TV Guide discusses Rex Is Not Your Lawyer

TV Guide's Matt Roush talks about Rex Is Not Your Lawyer and about fast-tracking (or not fast-tracking) the series here.

Being asked about fast-tracking in relation to the series, her reply was:
To rush a show on air that’s as offbeat as this one appears to be could be a huge mistake. Trying to launch something on NBC in the spring risks having it get lost in the current swamp of failure. Much better to wait and put something like this in the mix next season, when NBC pretty much has to take risks to make noise to reverse the PR nightmare of the current debacle. It’s hard to imagine them going anywhere but up, and to do that, they need to get behind at least a few shows in the fall that will command attention (and not the sort that remaking Knight Rider tends to get you). I can’t attest to the quality of Rex at this stage of the game, but NBC could do far worse than building a show around a major talent like David Tennant. Fingers crossed.

Many thanks to wrytered for the link.

David Tennant's salary at the BBC

The Daily Mail says (and is surprised) that actor Trevor Eve earned more than David Tennant at the BBC.

It was widely reported (but never denied or confirmed by the BBC) that David Tennant was paid less than Christopher Eccleston when he took over the role of the Doctor in Doctor Who in 2005.

Subsequently various newspapers reported increasing sums that they believed David was paid for his later series.
