What's On Stage Awards announced tonight - David Tennant is nominated

Tonight the What's On Stage Awards are announced at the Prince of Wales theatre in London.

David Tennant has been nominated for the Best Actor In A Play Award for his portrayal of Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing. However David is in a difficult category as he is up against James Corden (One Man, Two Gurvnors), Jude Law (Anna Christie), Kevin Spacey (Richard III) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Frankenstein).

His production of the play was also nominated for Best Shakespearean Production. (One of the other nominees in that category was The Globe's version of the same play.)

David Tennant & Catherine Tate reuniting on stage in Much Ado About Nothing was also nominated in the Theatre Event of the Year Award and Josie Rouke was nominated for Best Director for Much Ado About Nothing.

It is not known whether or not David Tennant will attend the awards.

The awards were voted for by the public and the voting period was from lunchtime on Friday 2nd December until midnight on Tuesday 31st January 2012. Apparently 12,000 theatre fans voted in the 26 categories.

For the first time the ceremony will be streamed online. However it will not be just a stream of the performances on stage but a mixture of results announcements, acceptance speeches, audience reactions and backstage interviews with the winners.

Video coverage will commence from 7pm tonight and will be carried exclusively on the Whatsonstage.com and www.timeout.com/london websites. On Whatsonstage.com, the video player will sit on the Awards microsite homepage at www.whatsonstage.com/awards.

As usual at DavidTennantOnTwitter.com we will tweet the news as it happens.

Final day of recording David Tennant's production of Romeo and Juliet

Yesterday was the final day of recording Romeo and Juliet which will be broadcast as part of BBC Radio Three's Shakespeare Season in April. There were just a couple of tweets yesterday from the unofficial twitter account from Studio 60A.

So far they have not indicated on which day David Tennant recorded his lines (he is only in three scenes).

Among the tweets posted yesterday were:

At 4.15pm:
Dancing at Capulet's - mainly men in studio, so some had to wear practice skirts. I got to lead Ron Cook...he was the woman in a red skirt.

At 5.40pm:
Finishing up on Romeo and Juliet. Or to quote a certain writer, parting..is such sweet sorrow...

They also made some fun tweets such as a photo of their costume cupboard.

Next week the same cast record Twelfth Night. It has not been announced about which character David Tennant will play but it is expected that he with have a larger role in that production.

More tweets from the studio where David Tennant's production of Romeo and Juliet is being recorded.

Today there were more tweets from the unofficial twitter account from Studio 60A. This is the BBC Radio Drama studio where the cast are recording Romeo and Juliet this week which will be broadcast as part of BBC Radio Three's Shakespeare Season in April.

So far they have not indicated whether or not David Tennant has recorded his lines (he is only in three scenes). It's NOT confirmed but there was a tweet earlier today which hinted that David Tennant was involved in interviewing people today for the role of Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Among the tweets posted today were:

At 11.30am:
A funny thing about recording a play out of sequence: killing a character, then bringing them back to life for the next scene #playinggod

At 12/45pm they tweeted a photo of the studio:

At 2pm:
Juliet and the Nurse are centre stage (well, mic) this afternoon. News of Tybalt reaches the Capulet's pad.

At 4pm:
The wedding night arrives! The Studio Manager has fashioned a lovely bed for Romeo and Juliet, and she's now trying to get Romeo to take of his...er...shoes.

At 5pm:
I didn't realise how many times Romeo has to leg it over the balcony in this play!

Today there were a few tweets from the unofficial twitter account from Studio 60A. This is the BBC Radio Drama studio where the cast are recording Romeo and Juliet this week which will be broadcast as part of BBC Radio Three's Shakespeare Season in April.

Among the tweets posted today were:

At 12.15pm:
Well after a day of love, it's back to the war... Capulet versus Montague. The actors are swapping words for swords.

(It was announced in advance that yesterday they were going to record the famous balcony scene.)

At 1.15pm:
Capulets & Montagues sit side by side in the green room, sharing anecdotes and biscuits. Wasn't like this in Shakespeare's time.

At 2.50pm they joked:
Ben and Mercutio....the likely lads enter the studio!

At 5pm the final tweet was:
Romeo's banished, crying on the floor. Still, cheered up by the fact that his wedding night's just round the corner.

So far the studio has not tweeted whether or not David Tennant has recorded his lines in the play.

Viewing figures for the David Tennant narrated Wild About Pandas

Last night was the first non-Scotland broadcast of the David Tennant narrated documentary Wild About Pandas on BBC Two at 9pm.

It received 1.52million viewers which was 6.3% of the viewing audience at that time but it is unlikely that it had many viewers in Scotland as it had already been broadcast twice in that country.

On BBC1 in the 9pm slot was Hustle which obtained 4.64million (19.4%) and on ITV1 was Law and Order UK which received 4.80m (20.1%) plus a small number of viewers on ITV HD.

To the best of my knowledge there was no advertisement in advance for Wild About Pandas and both Hustle and Law and Order UK are in the middle of a series so have an established viewing public.

If the documentary had been broadcast at the same time all over the UK and on a different evening (as a Friday is an unusual choice for a nature documentary) it is quite likely that the figures would have been much higher.

As usual the final figures will be announced in about ten days.

Update about David Tennant movies

Today ScreenDaily.com posted an article which said that the first footage of David Tennant’s forthcoming movie Nativity 2: The Second Coming would be shown at the Berlin European Film Market.

Nativity 2 is being shown by Moviehouse Entertainment which is a film sales company. Their website says that it is in post-production which is expected as the movie was filmed towards the end of last year and is not due to be released until November. eOne Entertainment are distributing Nativity 2 in Britain.

The European Film Market started today and continues until 17th February. As well as screening hundreds of completed movies, film companies will also show clips of movies which are in pre-production and are due to be released in the coming year (such as Nativity 2) to get them distributed in other countries too.

ScreenDaily.com also posted today that the movie Emotional Rescue was in pre-production and linked David Tennant’s name with it despite his name being removed from the movie website earlier this week.

David Tennant's name no longer on Emotional Rescue movie website

On 4th January we posted that a US based PR company had tweeted that David Tennant was attached to the movie Emotional Rescue which was due to start shooting in Winter 2012.

David's name, an unofficial photo and an out of date bio soon appeared on the movie website EmotionalRescueTheMovie.com.

In the past couple of weeks there have been rumours circulating that the movie has been struggling for funding and today David's name (and the name of all the cast members) have been removed from the website, plus the filming period has been changed to Spring 2012.

One or two POSSIBLE new radio productions for David Tennant

Today an interview with actor Joe Sims on the ThisIsBristol website stated that his "next project is with David Tennant working on Romeo and Juliet for Radio 4."

Also today a BBC radio producer confirmed that new productions of Shakespeare's plays The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet and Twelfth Night are all scheduled to be broadcast in April / May but he said that it was for BBC Radio Three.

Last November the BBC issued a press release to say that both Romeo And Juliet and Twelfth Night would be performed by a single company of actors cast across both productions on Radio Three.

Please remember that David Tennant's involvement in this project or projects is NOT confirmed.
